Ripsey Seat Bag - Installation

Ripsey V2 Installation

Step 1

Put the shorter bar of the saddle clamp above your saddle rails, and slide/rotate the "half-pipe" shims until they cradle your saddle rails.

Repeat with the longer bar below your saddle rails. Then insert the included bolts and tighten just enough so that the bars doesn't move on your rails, and then another 1/4 turn.

If using carbon rails, be careful of torque and tighten the minimum amount possible to prevent movement.

Step 2:

Clean your seat post/stanchion with isopropyl alcohol.

This is important for two reasons: any lingering dirt could scratch your post, and most dropper posts will have a thin layer of grease on the stanchion that must be removed for a secure installation.

Step 3:

Install the correct shims fit your seat post.

Most MTB dropper posts will use either the 25mm or 26mm shim (included), so try both and see which fits best.

We also include a shim for 27.2mm rigid posts. 27.2mm droppers and some 34.9mm droppers will need optional shims - click here for a table of stanchion sizes.

If you need to change shims and they don't pop out easily by hand, use the screwdriver slot for leverage.

Step 4:

Install the tray onto your seat post/stanchion.

It's possible to run the clamp at the very top of your post if you want to maximize dropper travel, but the dry bag will fit best with the clamp 1-2 inches below.

Tighten both bolts, just enough to prevent movement.

Note: The clamp height you choose will affect tire clearance - placing it lower will limit dropper travel and also change the angle of the harness to create more clearance.

Step 5:

Thread straps through the Austere Mfg cam buckles on the sides of the harness.

Install your dry bag and thread the top strap through the dry bag loop, then tighten all straps.

The amount you tighten each strap matters - tightening the side straps more will improve tire clearance, but tightening the top strap more will improve stability.

Step 6:

When tightening the top strap, it's best to use a "ratcheting" motion:

  • 1) Pull up on the loose end of the strap to use the buckle for leverage.

  • 2) Use your other hand to hold the strap in place.

  • 3) Pull up and backwards in an arc to take in the slack.

This process takes a bit of practice to get the timing right, so don't be discouraged if it doesn't work the first time you try it.

Step 7:

All done! Give your bag a punch or two and make sure it doesn't move much. If the movement is excessive:

1) Make sure the movement isn't coming from the seat post clamp - if so, tighten those bolts more.

2) Make sure the straps are all very tight! The Austere cam buckles are extremely strong, so you can give them a good hearty pull.

Ripsey V1-to-V2 Retrofit

Step 1:

Cut the front strap off your Ripsey tray.

Leave the base of the strap in place - it weighs very little and it's difficult to remove the grommets safely.

Step 2:

Install the retrofit kit on top of the remaining strap, with the bolt heads and nylon washers on the inside, and metal washers and lock nuts on the outside.

That's it for the retrofit! Click here for installation onto your bike.
